Best Pets in Clash of Clans: How to Pick One
Every Home Village pet's real role — tank, healer, ranged support, or utility — and how to pick the right one for your hero instead of guessing.
Pets fill different jobs, not one power scale
The 12 Home Village pets aren't a simple better-to-worse ladder — each does a genuinely different job in a fight: some tank and soak hits, some deal sustained damage, some heal, and a few provide utility effects like slowing enemy defenses or granting temporary invulnerability. Comparing a healer's DPS number to an attacker's DPS number and calling the attacker "better" misses what the healer is actually for.
Because every hero can only bring one active pet into a fight, the real question isn't "which pet is strongest" in the abstract — it's which role your hero, in the army you actually run, needs filled.
The real roles, grouped
- Tanks: Mighty Yak breaks Walls on contact and gets tankier if its hero goes down — built to soak damage and open compartments, not to post the highest DPS number.
- Healers: Unicorn heals its hero continuously, functioning like a personal Healer that never leaves — broadly useful across almost any army since sustained healing keeps a hero alive longer in nearly every attack.
- Ranged support: Electro Owl and Sneezy attack from a distance instead of standing next to the hero, trading survivability for reach.
- Crowd control: Frosty and Poison Lizard both slow enemy defenses down rather than maximizing raw damage, which matters more against defense-dense compartments than against open ground.
- Utility: Phoenix grants its hero temporary invulnerability at a critical moment, Diggy reattaches to a new hero if its original one falls, and Spirit Fox grants brief invisibility — none of these show up as a DPS number, but all three change how survivable an attack actually is.
How to actually pick one
Start from what your hero and army already struggle with, not from a ranked list. A hero that keeps dying before the attack finishes benefits more from Unicorn's sustained healing or Phoenix's invulnerability window than from a small damage increase. An army that struggles to open compartments benefits from a tanky, wall-breaking pet like Mighty Yak more than from extra ranged damage.
Every pet unlocks at a specific Town Hall and levels up with Dark Elixir through the Pet House, same as a hero — check the Pets database for exact unlock levels and per-level costs before committing to one.
