Over 130,000 people are incarcerated in private prisons, institutions run by companies whose main goal is profit, not rehabilitation. Like any responsible corporation, Corrections Corporation of America (CCA, now known as CoreCivic) cuts costs to the bone by paying minimal salaries, chronically understaffing its prisons, and and skimping on prisoners’ healthcare. The savings are passed on to shareholders, and the costs are borne by the prisoners, corrections officers, and society at large.
In this episode we take a deep dive into Shane Bauer’s undercover exposé of the private prison industry, My Four Months as a Private Prison Guard.
